Statement in support of the Truth-Telling and Healing Inquiry
The Queensland Human Rights Commission, and its specialist Yirmba First Nations Unit, supports Treaty and Truth-Telling processes as integral parts of the reconciliation process.
Through the Yirmba First Nations Unit, the Commission aims to become a valuable tool for First Nations people in achieving freedom, respect, equality, dignity, and self-determination, in their everyday lives.
The Commission applauds the way the Truth Telling and Healing Inquiry has enabled First Nations Queenslanders to share their invaluable stories. We note the exceptional way in which the Inquiry has considered cultural sensitivities in collecting and safely storing these important pieces of historical evidence.
The Commission strongly supports the decision by Inquiry Chair Joshua Creamer to continue to accept online submissions, and we look forward to the Inquiry’s outcomes when they become available.
We urge the Queensland Government to consult with the Inquiry Chair and First Nations leaders on the way forward for Queensland’s treaty and truth-telling processes.
