Statement from the Queensland Human Rights Commissioner Scott McDougall on recent bomb threats targeting Muslim communities in Queensland

I am horrified that within the space of a week I am issuing a second statement to reiterate that there is no place for racial hatred or vilification in Queensland.

Over the past few days, the Queensland Islamic community has been the target of bomb threats, with both the Gold Coast Mosque in Arundel and the Islamic College of Brisbane receiving threats.

The Queensland Human Rights Commission continues to stand with the Muslim community, and all of our migrant communities, in condemning these actions.

All Queenslanders have a right to live without vilification due to their religion or race and this is protected under the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991. Serious vilification is a criminal act under the Criminal Code.

All Queensland children are entitled to feel safe and secure in their homes and public places such as schools and places of worship.

Queensland holds strength in its diversity and strength in its inclusivity.

These strengths must be upheld through calling out the vile actions of a few.
