The new Queensland Human Rights Commissioner, Ms Debbie Platz APM, commenced a five-year term on 30 January 2026.
She is the second Commissioner to be appointed to the role in Queensland, succeeding Mr Scott McDougall who held the role for seven years.
Commissioner Platz brings extensive public sector leadership experience to the role, including her recent role as the New South Wales State Emergency Service (SES), Deputy Commissioner Operations, where she was responsible for safeguarding communities from natural disasters.
Her career also spans significant roles in the Australian Federal Police (AFP) as Assistant Commissioner and the Queensland Police Service as Assistant Commissioner, where she held a strong focus on upholding the rights of victims of crime, children and vulnerable people.
Commissioner Platz has always fought for the rights of the most vulnerable communities with career highlights including establishing the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation – bringing together law enforcement and NGOs globally in an effort to combat forced marriage and child exploitation.
Debbie has been recognised for her ethical and diligent service, which includes being awarded an Australian Police Medal and Queensland Police service medal, along with a meritorious service medal.
